How to Choose the Right Tile for Floors, Walls, and Shower Floors

"Which tile should I use?" is really three questions, because a floor, a wall, and a shower pan each put a different demand on the tile. A floor gets walked on and gets wet. A wall does neither. A shower floor gets standing water, bare feet, and a surface that has to pitch to a drain. Pick one tile and try to use it everywhere and at least one of those surfaces ends up with the wrong product, usually the one where it matters most.
The good news is that tile is one of the few finishes with real, published numbers behind it. The industry rates wear, water absorption, and wet slip resistance with standardized tests (the TCNA standards, which we explain separately), and once you know which number governs which surface, most of the guesswork disappears. Here is how we choose tile on our DFW bathroom and kitchen remodels, and the reasoning behind each call.

Start with the body: porcelain, ceramic, or stone
Before finish or color, a tile is defined by what it is made of and how much water it drinks. That water-absorption number is the cleanest line between the main categories. Porcelain is fired hotter and denser and absorbs 0.5% of its weight in water or less, which the industry calls impervious. That density is why porcelain is the default for wet rooms and floors: it does not soak up water, it resists staining, and it holds up to traffic. Ceramic (non-porcelain) absorbs more, which is perfectly fine on a dry wall but is the reason we rarely put standard glazed ceramic on a floor or in a shower pan.
Natural stone, marble, travertine, slate, is porous by nature, so it lives or dies by sealing and maintenance. It is beautiful, and we install plenty of it, but a client needs to know going in that a honed marble floor will want resealing and will etch if you set a lemon on it. That is not a defect; it is the material. Where a homeowner loves the marble look but not the upkeep, marble-look porcelain gives most of the appearance with none of the sealing, which is why so many of our bathrooms land there.
Glass and cement (encaustic) tile round out the palette, glass mostly as an accent or wall feature, cement for pattern-forward floors that, like stone, need sealing. Each has a place; none of them is a do-everything tile.
Finish is a safety decision, not just a look
The finish, how shiny or textured the surface is, does more than set the mood. On anything that gets wet, it decides how much grip your foot has. Polished tile is ground to a mirror shine, and it is gorgeous in the right place. But water sits on that mirror surface as a thin slick film, and that film is what a foot slides on. So polished tile belongs on walls, backsplashes, and dry floors, and it is the wrong choice for a shower floor or a bathroom floor that catches splashes.
The grippy finishes are the plainer ones: matte, honed (a soft matte, common on stone), and textured. Our rule is simple: the wetter and more barefoot the surface, the more texture we choose, and we let the shine live up on the walls where nobody stands.
One caution on shopping by looks alone: sheen is a strong hint, not a guarantee. A few matte tiles still test slippery and a few polished ones pass. So on a floor we go by the tested slip number, covered next, not by how the sample feels in the showroom.
The two numbers that decide a floor: PEI and DCOF
For a floor, two ratings do most of the work, and both are printed on the spec sheet of any serious tile. The first is PEI, the wear rating, a 1-to-5 scale that answers one question: will this tile still look new after years of shoes crossing it? Class 1 is wall-only. Bathroom floors want Class 3 or higher, and a busy kitchen or entry is happier at 4.
The second, and the one people skip, is DCOF, the slip rating, measured wet. The benchmarks are easy to remember: a floor that gets walked on wet should test at 0.42 or greater, and a barefoot wet surface like a shower floor sits in a stricter category at 0.50 or greater.
Worth being straight about: 0.42 is a comparison standard, not a promise no one will ever slip. Soap, oils, and worn-smooth tile all change real-world traction. What the number does is keep the obviously-too-slick tile off your floor. We check it on the actual tile a client falls in love with before it goes down, every time.
Floors: durable, slip-rated, and flat enough for the format
So a floor tile needs to clear three bars: a porcelain (or otherwise floor-rated) body, a PEI class that matches the traffic, and a wet DCOF of at least 0.42. Get those three right and you have a floor that lasts and does not turn into a skating rink after a shower.
Format matters too, enough that it gets its own section below. The short version: the bigger the tile, the flatter the floor has to be. If you are eyeing the popular 24-by-48 panels, plan for prep, not just tile.
Large-format tile: gorgeous, and stricter about everything
The big tile everyone wants right now, 12-by-24s, 24-by-48 panels, long planks, earns its popularity. Fewer grout lines read as calm and modern, and a big panel can make a small bathroom feel larger, not smaller.
The catch is simple: the bigger the tile, the stricter the installation. A big, rigid tile cannot follow a wavy floor, so the floor has to be made flatter first (that is the grinding and self-leveling you see as a prep line on a good quote). It needs a stronger mortar made for the weight, a more careful layout so edges do not sit proud of each other, and leveling clips holding everything flush while the mortar cures. None of that is upsell. It is what the industry's installation standards require once a tile edge passes about 15 inches, and it is the difference between a floor that feels like glass and one that catches your toe.

Walls: where you get to have fun
Walls are the easy part, and the fun part. Nobody walks on a wall, so wear ratings and slip numbers stop mattering. That frees you up: this is where the glossy polished porcelain, the dramatic marble-look slab, the glass, the zellige with all its handmade shimmer, all belong. Lighter-duty glazed ceramic that we would never put on a floor is perfectly at home on a shower wall or a backsplash.
The practical notes on walls are about weight and layout, not durability. Big, heavy wall tile needs the right setting materials and, in a shower, the right waterproofing behind it (more on that below). And because the wall is where the eye lands, this is where the layout, the pattern, the grout color, and the transitions earn the room its finished look. We tell clients to spend their boldest tile budget up on the walls, where it is seen and where it is safe.
Shower floors: why we almost always reach for mosaic
The shower floor is the most demanding tile surface in the house, and it is where the wrong choice shows up fastest. It is barefoot, constantly wet, and, critically, it is not flat: it has to pitch on every side toward the drain so water actually leaves. That combination is why we almost always specify small-format mosaic, roughly 2-inch tiles or smaller, penny rounds, small hexagons, and the like.
Two reasons, and both are physics, not fashion. First, grip. A field of small tiles packs a dense network of grout joints, on the order of 15 to 20 joints per square foot for a 1-inch mosaic versus one or two for a 12-inch tile. Every one of those slightly-recessed grout lines is a micro-tread for a wet foot. More joints, more traction, which is exactly what you want the one place you stand barefoot in water. (Remember, a shower floor sits in that stricter barefoot-wet category, DCOF 0.50 or better.)
Second, the slope. Because the pan pitches to the drain, the surface is really a shallow bowl. Mesh-backed mosaic sheets flex and conform to that slope, seating flat against the pitch. A big rigid tile cannot; it bridges the low spots, rocks, and either has to be relief-cut into pieces or it traps water. So the small tile is not just safer underfoot, it is the format that physically fits a sloped floor. You will often see the shower floor in a mosaic while the walls run large-format, and now you know why: two surfaces, two jobs, two different right answers.
The part you don't see: waterproofing, grout, and movement
The best tile selection in the world fails if the assembly behind it is wrong, and in a wet area that assembly is waterproofing. Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own; the water management lives behind or beneath them. On our showers we build a continuous waterproof system, a bonded sheet membrane like Schluter-KERDI or a liquid membrane like RedGard, so the wall and pan are sealed as a system before a single tile goes up. That is the layer that keeps a leak from becoming rot inside the wall.
Grout is a spec, not an afterthought. The joint width has to match the tile: precision-cut (rectified) tile can carry the tight modern lines, ordinary tile wants a wider joint, and handmade tile wider still, because the joint is where each tile's small size differences get absorbed. On material, cement grout is the everyday workhorse, and epoxy grout costs more and is fussier to install but is essentially waterproof and stain-proof, which earns its place on shower floors. Finally, the corners and the tile-to-tub joint get flexible caulk, never rigid grout, so the assembly can move a little without cracking. Trends are the fun layer on top of the fundamentals, and the current ones happen to play well with the rules above. Large-format porcelain, including slab-look and 2-by-4-foot planks, keeps growing because fewer grout lines read as calm and modern, just remember the flatness prep that size demands. Matte and textured finishes are winning over high-gloss for floors, which is a happy coincidence because matte is also the safer wet-floor choice. Zellige and other handmade-look tile bring warmth and irregularity to walls and backsplashes. And wood-look plank porcelain gives the warm look of wood in a body that shrugs off a wet bathroom, the kind of have-it-both-ways choice that makes porcelain so versatile.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same tile on my bathroom floor and walls?
Sometimes, but only if the tile is floor-rated. A floor tile (porcelain, right PEI class, wet DCOF of at least 0.42) is almost always fine to carry up the walls if you like the look. The reverse is not true: a lighter wall tile should not go on the floor. And even a floor-rated tile is usually too large or too slick to be the best choice for the shower floor itself, where small mosaic wins.
Is polished porcelain safe for a shower floor?
No, and we steer clients away from it there. Polished porcelain is beautiful on walls and dry, low-traffic floors, but its smooth surface holds a film of water and tests low on wet slip resistance. A shower floor is barefoot and constantly wet, the highest-grip category there is, so it calls for a textured or small-mosaic surface, not a polished one.
What tile is best for a shower floor?
Small-format mosaic, roughly 2-inch tiles or smaller, such as penny rounds or small hexagons. The dense grout-line network adds grip for wet, bare feet, and the mesh-backed sheets flex to conform to the floor's slope toward the drain. Large rigid tile bridges that slope and is both harder to install and less safe underfoot.
What is DCOF, and what number should I look for?
DCOF (dynamic coefficient of friction) is the North American measure of a tile's slip resistance when wet, tested by the ANSI A326.3 method. Look for a wet DCOF of 0.42 or greater for a level interior floor that gets wet, and 0.50 or greater for barefoot wet areas like a shower floor. It is a comparative minimum spec, not a guarantee against slipping, so soap and maintenance still matter.
Why does large-format tile need extra floor prep?
Big tiles cannot follow a wavy subfloor, so any dip shows up as lippage, one tile edge sitting higher than the next. Large-format (an edge of about 15 inches or more) needs a flatter substrate (within 1/8 inch over 10 feet) and a medium-bed mortar that supports the tile without shrinking. Proper prep is what keeps an expensive tile from telegraphing every high spot in the floor.
Is porcelain or ceramic better for a bathroom?
For floors and wet areas, porcelain. It is denser and absorbs 0.5% water or less (impervious), so it resists water, stains, and wear better than standard ceramic. Ceramic is perfectly good on dry walls and can save a little money there. Natural stone and marble-look are options too, though real stone needs sealing while marble-look porcelain gives the look with far less upkeep.
