What the TCNA Handbook Means for Your Tile Project: A Plain-English Guide

Most construction arguments come down to opinion. Tile is different: the industry writes its rules down, updates them every year, and publishes them in a book professionals actually use. If you know even a little about that book, you can read a tile bid and tell whether the installer plans to do it right, and you can understand why the good bid includes line items the cheap one leaves out.

What the TCNA Handbook actually is

The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) publishes the TCNA Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation, a book of numbered, tested installation methods that gets updated every year. Each method has a letter-and-number name and spells out an exact recipe: what substrate, what membrane, what mortar, what tile, in what order. B415 is a tub surround over cement backer board. EJ171 is the movement-joint method. When an architect specs tile on a commercial job, these are the codes on the drawings.

Alongside the Handbook, TCNA administers the ANSI standards for tile: the A137 series grades the tile itself, the A108 series governs the workmanship, and the A118 series covers the mortars, grouts, and membranes. Together they are the yardstick the industry measures itself by, and the yardstick any dispute or warranty claim gets measured against.

Why should a homeowner care? Because 'built to TCNA methods' is the difference between a shower assembled the way the industry has proven works and a shower assembled the way somebody's uncle always did it. The rules below are the ones that show up most often in a residential remodel, and each one has a visible consequence when it is skipped.

Rule 1: the bigger the tile, the flatter the floor

The industry treats any tile with an edge longer than about 15 inches as large format, and that is the line where ANSI A108.02 tightens the rules (a 2024 update to the ANSI definitions goes further and formally defines large format as a facial dimension over 23 inches). Nearly everything popular right now, 12-by-24s, 24-by-48 panels, long planks, qualifies.

For standard tile, the floor under it must be flat to within 1/4 inch over 10 feet. Once any edge hits 15 inches, that tightens to 1/8 inch over 10 feet, and 1/16 inch over 2 feet. Why: a big, rigid tile cannot follow a wavy floor. It bridges the dips, rocks on the humps, and every high spot shows up as one tile edge sitting proud of its neighbor (the trade calls that lippage, and you feel it barefoot before you see it).

The practical consequence: a proper large-format bid almost always includes a floor prep line item, grinding the high spots and pouring self-leveling underlayment before a single tile is set. That line is not padding; it is the standard. A large-format bid with zero prep money in it is the one to be suspicious of.

Rule 2: big tile changes the mortar and how it is applied

Large tile is heavy, and ordinary thinset mortar can slump and shrink under it. The standards answer is LHT mortar (large and heavy tile mortar, what the trade used to call medium-bed), formulated to hold a big tile where it was set without sagging.

Coverage matters just as much. The standard requires the mortar to actually contact at least 80% of the tile's back on dry interior floors, and 95% in showers and outdoor work, with every corner supported. On big tile, hitting those numbers takes technique: comb the mortar ridges in one straight direction, back-butter the tile (a thin skim coat on its back), then bed it perpendicular to the ridges so the air escapes instead of getting trapped.

The visible consequence of skipping this: hollow-sounding corners now, cracked tiles and popped grout later. If you want one nerdy question that instantly tells a tile contractor you did your homework, ask what coverage they aim for in a shower. The right answer is 95%.

Rule 3: why big tile is not allowed in a 50% brick pattern

Here is the rule that surprises people. That classic subway-style brick pattern, each tile offset by half, is effectively off the table for large tile. ANSI A108.02 says offset patterns for any tile side over 15 inches should be 33% or less, and most tile manufacturers print the same limit in their own instructions.

The reason is physics, not fashion. Fired tile is never perfectly flat; it crowns very slightly toward its center. A 50% offset places each tile's highest point (the middle) directly against its neighbors' lowest points (the ends), which maximizes lippage along every joint. A 33% offset keeps highs near highs, and the floor reads flat.

The standard does leave a door open: if you want a bigger offset anyway, the installer builds a mock-up, and you and the designer approve its lippage before the real floor goes down. That is also a good general rule for any strong pattern choice: see it built small before you own it big. And the lippage allowance itself is tiny, 1/32 inch plus the tile's inherent warpage beside a narrow joint, which is why pattern, joint width, and floor prep all have to agree with each other.

Rule 4: grout joints have a minimum width, and the tile picks it

The razor-thin 'no grout' look you see online is not a style choice an installer can simply say yes to. ANSI A108.02 ties the joint to the tile: the grout joint must be at least three times the tile's actual size variation, and never thinner than 1/16 inch.

That is why rectified tile matters. Rectified tile has its edges precision-ground after firing, so every piece is nearly identical, and it can legitimately carry a tight 1/8-inch joint. Ordinary (calibrated) tile varies more and wants 3/16 inch or wider. Handmade and rustic tile varies most of all, which is exactly why it looks wrong with skinny joints: the joint is where the size variation gets absorbed.

On grout materials, plain-English version: cement grout is the everyday workhorse and comes in a standard grade (ANSI A118.6) and a polymer-modified high-performance grade (A118.7) that holds its color better and stains less. Epoxy grout (A118.3) costs more and is fussier to work with, but it is essentially non-absorbent, which makes it the upgrade pick for shower floors and heavy-use surfaces. Sanded grout fills wider joints; unsanded is for joints 1/8 inch and under and for polished marble and glass that sand would scratch.

Rule 5: tile floors need room to move

Tile assemblies expand and contract with temperature and moisture, and rigid grout cannot absorb that movement. The TCNA's EJ171 method is the rulebook here: flexible soft joints (sealant or caulk, not grout) at every perimeter, every change of plane (wall corners, the tile-to-tub joint), and periodic joints across large floors, every 20-25 feet indoors, tightening to 8-12 feet where sunlight or moisture is in play.

The visible consequence of skipping it: grout that cracks and crumbles in the corners within a year, or in the worst case a floor that tents up off the substrate. When you see crisp caulk lines in the corners of a new shower instead of grout, that is not laziness; that is EJ171 done right.

How to use all this when you read a tile bid

You do not need to memorize section numbers. You need five questions. Does the large-format bid include floor prep? (It should, almost always.) What mortar goes under the big tile? (An LHT product, not bargain thinset.) What coverage do you aim for in the shower? (95%.) What offset are we running on the 12-by-24s? (33% or less, or a mock-up first.) Are the corners and the tub joint caulked or grouted? (Caulked, always.)

An installer who answers those five without flinching is building to the standard. And if a bid is dramatically cheaper than the others, this list is usually where the money came from: no prep, cheap mortar, grouted corners. The tile itself is the same at every price; the assembly under and around it is what you are actually buying.
